The Importance Of The Traffic Management Plan

In cases of road closures, repairs and anything that can make traffic come to a standstill, a plan must be developed beforehand to manage the situation before it blows out of proportion. Several factors such as road repairs, closures and accidents can affect traffic which may worsen if left unmanaged. The goal of the team is to get everyone home safely and at the earliest time possible.

This implementation of this plan commences with the extensive training provided to the team to ensure they are the strongest fleet of traffic control specialists. The goal of this team is to get everyone home safely and quickly in the shortest time that’s possible. Experience will tell us that with situations like road closures or repairs, traffic will build up and may extend several miles in both directions. Lessening the impact of traffic backlogs is one of the primary objectives of traffic management plans. The traffic management team will work on developing a traffic management plan to lessen the impact on to traffic backlogs. The traffic management plan must be all-inclusive and time efficient. A good part of this plan could be the use of buses or trains which will reduce significantly the number of vehicles on the road.

A good traffic management plan should put the safety of the public as it’s first and foremost consideration. Appropriate lane markings and directional signs must be installed to inform the public about road closures or ongoing road construction or repairs. The local officials must be consulted by the company who is implementing the plan in order to identify methods of informing the public and also to find alternative routes for vehicles during the process. Regular updates should also be given to the public on new closures and detours and subsequent alternate routes so they can plan their trips more efficiently. The comprehensive plan must be developed with the intention to mitigate the effects of the road closures and to maintain traffic access and movement in the area.

Part of the traffic management plan is to identify the strategies that will help facilitate planning, managing and evaluating the construction or repair work zone, traffic safety and mobility access to the general public. These strategies could be in the form of efficient traffic control by providing extra signage for guidance to motorists, reducing speed limits of motorists, providing alternative routes and also by providing temporary roads in order to facilitate safe traffic flow.

As implied above, local officials are a big help to this traffic plan. Their traffic operations personnel can make adjustments to their traffic signal timings in order to improve vehicle capacity at intersections. They should also conduct public outreach and information/discussions to update the general public on the progress of the construction or repairs done.

A crisis or incident plan must be included in the traffic management plan to help manage traffic flow in the case of emergency situations. This will help manage the flow of emergency situations. Coordination with the local police and fire stations in the area should be included. Taking all of this into consideration should ensure your traffic management plan will be effective.
