Cigarette tar contains some of the most carcinogenic substance known to man and a lot of that is lodged in a man’s lungs. You say you want to feel better, live longer and even have a little extra cash on hand? Easy. Just quit smoking. In order for you to quit smoking, you will need a definite desire to quit smoking, a paper and pen, gums and fruit maybe, willpower and a calendar. Options such as nicotine gum, prescription meds, and hypnosis may be part of it. The following are some easy steps to quit smoking:

Step 1. Ready yourself for quitting. Have a specific day to quit. Don’t depart from this plan. Ask yourself what you can get from stopping smoking. Say for example, you would like to get healthier, develop fewer wrinkles, have nicer breath, save money and you won’t be subjecting people to second-hand smoke.

Step 2. Write down what the smoking prompts are that make you want to smoke. What are your smoking prompts? Is it when you come home after a hard day’s work? After dinner? With coffee? Knowing what prompts you to smoke can help you quit.

Step 3. List all the health risks associated with smoking. These may be a stroke, heart disease, several types of cancer, ulcer, diabetes, eye diseases and osteoporosis. Remind yourself that cigarettes contain over 4000 noxious chemicals. Some of which are used on insects and in rat poisons.

Step 4. Tell your friends and family about your decision. They can encourage you, plus you are less likely to back out if others know your goal.

Step 5. Call your state stop smoking  advice lines for free advice, nicotine substitutes and a plan.

Step 6. Buy lots of gums or fruit. When you have a craving for cigarettes, suck on an orange or chew some gum. These are your stop smoking products which can help you to forget smoking.

Step 7. Keep busy so your mind doesn’t start craving a cigarette. Begin a project or a new hobby. If you experience severe withdrawal symptoms such as intense cravings, tension, irritability, headaches, drowsiness or trouble sleeping, consult your physician on the possibility of using a nicotine patch or hypnosis cd’s.

Step 8. Keep going. Indicate your success on a calendar. One day smoke free can eventually lead to one week, one month, and one year and so on. Your calendar can be used as your reason.

Step 9. Be prepared for difficult situations or even relapses. If you relapse, start the process over and surround yourself with compassionate undrstanding. Let go of self-judgement and criticism.

Step 10. If willpower isn’t working for you, ask your doctor if you might be a good candidate for a prescription drug that may help you quit or he may also recommend you to a stop smoking program. Some people stop smoking with hypnosis, that’s how Courtney Cox, Drew Barrymore and Billy Joel kicked the habit.

Step 11. Be happy to live a happier, healthier and better smelling life.
