Downhill mountain biking uses gravity and is a timed mountain biking event. The competitors are timed at an interval of 30 seconds commonly. The courses for such events take around two to five minutes to complete. This type of biking involves navigating steep, downhill terrain. There is negligible climbing in such courses and it is one of the fastest biking events.

Why Downhill Mountain Biking?

The main reason why most people choose to take part in downhill mountain biking is because it really gets the adrenaline pumping. You go at extreme speeds downhill and you also take part in various tricks and jumps too. It is certainly not a sport for the beginner and the chance of having an accident is extremely high. Whilst you may not pedal as much in downhill biking, due to the high speeds involved, when you do pedal it makes the sport even more dangerous. The reasons why downhill bikers choose to pedal even though it may seem that they don’t need to, is to gain an advantage over their opponents.

There are two things which could happen in downhill mountain biking. The first is that you race against an opponent and the second is that you race against time. When you choose to enter races where you race an opponent, it is known as a dual slalom.

Rough Riderz Show MTB Can Be For Everyone

September 25, 2010 · Filed Under Marketing · Comments Off

Downhill MTB is a sport that has seen a continual rise in popularity over the last few years, both in the UK and abroad. Traditionally, mountain biking is a sport that can only be enjoyed by those who are fully able-bodied. That’s no longer the case however, with the Rough Riderz and their unique form of MTB than can be enjoyed by both able-bodied and disabled riders.

The Rough Riderz team utilise an ingenious new bike design that features 4 wheels instead of 2, and can be fully enjoyed by anyone who no longer has the use of their legs. The bikes are primarily gravity powered, meaning the rider only needs to be concerned with breaking and steering the vehicle. The bikes can carry themselves extremely quickly over very rough terrain, with users quickly getting up to speeds of over 30 mph.

The four wheeled bikes can be enjoyed by anyone, although generally they’re utilised far more by the disabled riders. There are several different methods for setting up the four wheeled bikes, all of which give different results, so no matter what your age or level of experience, there’ll be a suitable setup for you. Whilst the sport is designed for disabled riders, users must have the ability of their arms and hands in order to be able to properly control the bike. Although the bikes are mainly utilised on downhill courses (being powered by gravity), users can self-propel the bikes over particularly flat, short distances.

If you are disabled and want to take part, you’ll need to buy your own bike and equipment, although some places do offer help with funding. Maybe one day you’ll be able to buy one of these specialised bikes using the Mobility Scheme, although this isn’t an option at the moment.

So if you’re after a disabled vehicle that’s very fast, hugely good fun and extremely high octane, don’t bother looking at the Nissan NV200 WAV and get yourself a four wheeled mountain bike!
