Movement of people and goods from one particular place to another creates traffic. People today are constantly on the move. People work in one place, shop in another place, and go to school in yet another place. The factories also have to ensure that their products reach their final destination – the consumers! There’s a need to manage the movement of people and goods in a safe and efficient manner. Traffic control is essential in being able to manage the safe movement of people and goods efficiently. The vital reason for traffic control is to manage the traffic to reduce or eliminate accidents.

Traffic control is an important aspect in ensuring the safety and efficiency of transportation systems. A very good example of this is air traffic control, where very efficient traffic management has to be implemented to ensure the overall safety of the airplanes and passengers. The air traffic controllers are the decision makers directing when planes can take off or land. Doing this, the traffic controllers can guide the airplane traffic safely and efficiently.

On the road, one of the main contributors in traffic control is the traffic light. The coloured light indicators can guide the drivers whether to stop or go at certain time periods. A separate lane for vehicles turning left or right can be provided with a lighted arrow to minimize interference with opposing traffic.Good drivers must obey these traffic lights when approaching intersections.

Reckless driving is one of the main causes of road accidents. These drivers can cause damage and injury to others and can be held responsible since they have violated one or more traffic rules.

To enable to use traffic control effectively, there are traffic laws to follow. These laws govern and regulate vehicles so as to facilitate the orderly and timely flow of traffic. Traffic control is the organization of numerous rules, traffic signals or signs, marked lanes, intersections, and junctions. Some may have detailed or complex road rules while others will rely more on the driver’s common sense in safe driving.

Traffic control also involves directing vehicular traffic around a construction zone, and during road disruption caused by accidents, to prevent traffic congestion and to provide a safe route to the rescuers or emergency response groups. Efficient control is very important in order to effectively manage the flow of vehicles and pedestrians in these situations.
